Traces of Fall - Painting Nature's Details

Celebrate the beauty of autumn in this nature-inspired art workshop. In Traces of Fall, artist Sabine Fedder will guide you through creating a painted study of a single fallen leaf chosen by you.

You are encouraged to find a fallen leaf outdoors that catches your eye, whether through its shape, colour, texture, or even its imperfections.

This introductory painting class offers the chance to practice eye-to-hand observation while working with a new palette. You will begin by tracing the outline of your chosen leaf onto watercolour paper, then explore how to fill it in to reflect its unique colours, textures, and details, translating the intricacies of nature into expressive artwork.

The focus of this workshop is about slowing down, observing closely, and capturing the fleeting beauty of the season, one leaf at a time.

Time and date: October 15th, Wednesday from 11 AM to 12 PM

Location: Zoom

Materials needed: **This project will focus on exploring watercolor paints but can also be completed using colored pencils. While painting is encouraged, you’re welcome to create your artwork with colored pencils as well.

- watercolour paper (paper that will not bend or rip if wet - good quality paper is quite important for the success of the painting!) 8x10" is a good size

- watercolour palette or pencil crayons if you don't have access to paint. (sometimes it can really frustrate participants if the paint quality is low, I would suggest spending a bit more money on a paint palette and good quality brushes if possible, especially if they want to do more painting classes :))

- water container if you are using paint

- watercolor brushes (1 small thin brush, one medium size, one larger brush)

- Paper towel (to dry brushes and test colours)

- pencil of any colour for the outline

About the Speaker:

Sabine Fedder

Sabine Fedder is a Vancouver-based mixed-media artist working primarily with acrylics, watercolors, and modeling paste. Her work blends scientific precision with creative expression, informed by her background in biology and ongoing research in biomedical engineering, where she also contributes anatomical illustrations for academic publications.

Fedder’s art practice is rooted in community connection and emotional healing. Since high school, she has led art classes for seniors and children, using creativity as a tool for comfort and self-expression. In 2024, she founded a watercolor art program at BC Children’s Hospital as part of the Sibling Support Program, offering therapeutic paint nights for families of long-term care patients. She leads workshops at the Hospital each month and teaches art therapy at various retirement homes weekly.

Largely self-taught, Fedder has exhibited in numerous juried shows across Canada, including Artists in Our Midst and Paint on the Mountain, often as the youngest artist featured. In June 2025, she attended a residency in Provence, France, where she explored open-air painting and further developed her artistic voice within the region’s storied landscape.
