Never Stop Learning
We offer free events on Wednesdays of each month, providing information, workshops, and educational opportunities on topics related to well-being and research. We also promote other events in the community. Click the images for more information and registration. If you missed one of our Wellness Wednesdays or Research Seminar Series, you can watch past recordings here. Some sessions may not have been recorded at the request of the speakers.
Dancing with Parkinson's Vancouver Community Class
Meet, mingle, and move with your Parkinson’s community in BC! In collaboration with Dancing with Parkinson's and Inverso Productions, we are launching a new in-person dance class series for people living with Parkinson's disease and older adults.
This class will begin seated, move to stand behind the chair, and finish with the option of moving through the dance space. All abilities are invited to participate, and the dances can be modified for safe enjoyment. Wheelchairs and walkers are welcome. Care partners are welcome to join in but not necessary. We have lots of volunteers to help.
We hope you will join us to experience the joy and benefits of moving together to music!
Nutrition Moments
"Nutrition Moments" are a collaboration between the BC Brain Wellness Program and UBC Dietetics. Here, small groups of dietetics students share key nutrition information and actionable tips at the start of our exercise classes. These brief educational segments cover various nutrition topics, providing quick insights into healthy eating and lifestyle habits.
Research Seminar Series: Using arts-based interactions to support relationships with minimally communicative persons
Embodied and sensorial interactions have deep potential for developing relationships with those who are minimally communicative. In this talk, Dr. Blain-Moraes will present different ways that dance, music and therapeutic clowning have been used in her research along with physiologically based assistive technology to support interaction with children in palliative care and adults with advanced dementia.
Soup & Social
The BC Brain Wellness Program is excited to be collaborating with the University Neighbourhood Association to bring you the Soup + Social Series. This Fall series offers a monthly opportunity for participants to broaden their nutrition knowledge, connect with peers and cultivate friendships over a bowl of warm soup.

In collaboration with the Kitsilano Neighbourhood House, we would like to invite you to join us for an in-person art workshop in Kitsilano. Facilitated by Mady Mooney, this session will let you use colour, shape and imagery to express what is meaningful to you. Discover how the creative process can foster healing and mental well-being. No art skills required!
In-Person Workshop: Thank You Card Designing
In preparation for UBC Giving Day, you are invited you to join us in decorating cards which will be used to thank our donors for their generous support as well as showcase the artwork of our participants. There will be no instructor, and all materials will be provided (though you are welcome to bring your own).
Research Seminar Series The Role of Dietary Fats in Brain Health
Age-related cognitive decline has been associated with changes in white matter structures, which are the nerve tracts that connect different areas of the brain. White matter was named due to its light appearance from high fat (or lipid) content, but we are still learning about the biological role of different fats in brain function. In this presentation, Dr. Furber will discuss how different dietary fats influence the lipid species found in the brain and how this relates to healthy brain aging.

In-Person Workshop: Brushstrokes of BC
Join us for a relaxing, beginner-friendly watercolour workshop focused on painting iconic BC landscapes, including mountains and ocean scenery. This session will explore colour theory, watercolour techniques and mixing, and how to create depth in a painting.
Research Seminar Series: Are We Facing a Loneliness Epidemic, or Choosing Connection?
Is social connection a choice or a necessity for human flourishing? In this talk, Dr. Archer Lee will present a series of studies on what is needed to improve human connection on multiple levels: an acts-of-kindness intervention to reduce loneliness at the individual level, neighborhood social cohesion as a resource for community resilience, and global trends in social support. Together, this talk discusses what it means to build more connected individuals and communities in an increasingly isolated world.
Sunset Meditation - Mindfulness Under the Stars
Presented in collaboration with the H. R. MacMillan Space Centre, this wellness-focused evening combines a visually soothing planetarium experience with a meaningful conversation with David Greenshields on mindfulness and resilience.
Wellness Wednesday: The Healthy Aging Brain
In the first Wellness Wednesday of the year, Clinical Neuropsychologist Dr. Jodie Gawryluk from the University of Victoria will present about different trajectories of aging, including cognitive decline, healthy aging and super aging. Brain function and brain structure will both be discussed.

Life can feel overwhelming at times. It’s essential to find moments to breathe, create, and restore your energy. When things feel heavy or hurried, slowing down and reconnecting with yourself can bring calm and clarity.
A Creative Reset Session offers a peaceful, nurturing space to unwind and rediscover your inner balance through gentle creative exploration.

Wellness Wednesday: Beating the Winter Blues
For this month’s Wellness Wednesday, Dr. Lam will talk about the common symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, or feeling down and lethargic during the winter months, and how they relate to seasonal changes in biological rhythms. He will discuss management strategies for treating and preventing the winter blues, including tips for diet, activity and light exposure.

Inspired by Brandon Stanton’s street portraits and interviews in Humans of New York, Stories Across Time brings together people of different generations, cultures, and experiences to capture everyday life through storytelling.
Versatile Cooking: Fall Flavours
Celebrate the autumn harvest with seasonal cooking in our interactive virtual cook-along! Join our BC BWP registered dietitians, Yolanda Wang and Raihan Hassen, along with dietetics student Diana Bratu, as they each share a unique, seasonal recipe featuring autumn’s star ingredient - apples - showcasing the versatility of seasonal produce in the kitchen.
Intergenerational Women's Art from The Heart
BCBWP is partnering with UBC's Women Empowerment Club to create a collaborative, intergenerational event, that will run as our typical Art from the Heart classes go, but with a twist - half of the class will be young women studying at UBC! Participants will create their art based on a prompt, and then be given the chance to have an intergenerational dialogue with other participants about their own artwork. It's the perfect opportunity to blend creativity, community building and women empowerment for people of all ages! Open to all self-identifying women or gender diverse people.
Traces of Fall - Painting Nature's Details
Celebrate the beauty of autumn in this nature-inspired art workshop. In Traces of Fall, artist Sabine Fedder will guide you through creating a painted study of a single fallen leaf chosen by you.
You are encouraged to find a fallen leaf outdoors that catches your eye, whether through its shape, colour, texture, or even its imperfections.

VanDusen Garden Walking Tour & Picnic Lunch
Join us for a VanDusen Garden fieldtrip where our Gardening and Cooking instructor, Joanna Wilke, will guide you through the beautiful gardens featuring seasonal highlight such as the Laburnum Walk. We will split into a few groups to enjoy the walk through the garden based on mobility and walking speed preference to tour the garden. At around noon, we will have a picnic lunch break by the Maze area, so please bring your packed lunch to enjoy with the group.

Seats are limited! We encourage you to bring their own supplies, but we will have some supplies available for people to borrow. If you intend to borrow, you will need to fill out the supply borrow form on the website. Light snacks will be provided at the end.
March Student-Led Nutrition Workshops
These student-led sessions will include engaging activities, practical tips, and easy recipes, so you can confidently take steps to improve your nutritional wellbeing. Each session will end with a short Q&A, moderated by a Registered Dietitian, Lindsay Goodridge.
