Age-related cognitive decline has been associated with changes in white matter structures, which are the nerve tracts that connect different areas of the brain. White matter was named due to its light appearance from high fat (or lipid) content, but we are still learning about the biological role of different fats in brain function. In this presentation, Dr. Furber will discuss how different dietary fats influence the lipid species found in the brain and how this relates to healthy brain aging.

About the speaker:
Dr. Kendra Furber
Dr. Kendra Furber, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Northern Medical Program at the University of Northern British Columbia. She is also a Micheal Smith Health Research BC Scholar with a lab-based research program focused on the cellular mechanisms of myelination in the brain in the context of development, aging and disease. This research will provide insights into strategies for preventing damage or promoting repair in white matter tracts for healthy brain aging.
