Virtual Workshops: Creative Expressions: Techniques in Painting

  • BC Brain Wellness Program, Zoom (map)

We are excited to be offering an art techniques class. All skill levels welcome!

The classes will focus on acrylic and watercolour techniques, exploring landscapes, still life, abstract, realism, shading, and foundational shapes. Join us and explore your artistic abilities while experimenting with different styles in a relaxed, supportive environment!

If you are looking for a non-technical class based on creating art of special meaning to you, we invite you to look at our Art from the Heart classes instead.

This class will be offered virtually, once in June and once in July:

  • Friday, June 5, 1-2:30 PM: "Painted Skies"

Create a vibrant sunset painting while learning how to blend colours and build strong contrast through a variety of watercolour techniques. This workshop will explore colour mixing, layering pigments, and creating detailed silhouettes through shapes and composition. Participants will leave with an expressive, ready-to-frame landscape painting.

  • Friday, July 3, 1-2:30 PM: “Still Life in Watercolour”

This calming still-life watercolour workshop explores the art of truly observing an object. Through careful study, participants will begin to notice details, tones, and reflections they may not have seen initially. This process becomes a form of mindfulness while also introducing foundational watercolour techniques, including colour mixing and different methods of applying paint.

Suggested materials:

  • Watercolour paints

  • A variety of paint brushes in different sizes (especially one larger brush for backgrounds and a few smaller/thinner brushes for details)

  • Canvas paper or watercolour paper

  • A black Sharpie (optional, but helpful if participants may have trouble getting finer details with watercolour when creating foreground silhouettes)

  • A water container

  • Bounty/paper towels or something to clean brushes

  • Optional: Painter’s tape to tape the paper down to the table, creating a framed border effect

Registration for this workshop will be done on another platform called Jane instead of Omnify. If you do not yet have an account for BC Brain Wellness Program’s Jane Platform, you will be prompted to create an account in order to successfully register for the class. Please contact our office at 604-827-4386 or email brain.wellness@ubc.ca for help setting up.

About The Instructor: Sabine Fedder

Sabine Fedder is a Vancouver-based mixed-media artist working primarily with acrylics, watercolors, and modeling paste. Her work blends scientific precision with creative expression, informed by her background in biology and ongoing research in biomedical engineering, where she also contributes anatomical illustrations for academic publications.

Fedder’s art practice is rooted in community connection and emotional healing. Since high school, she has led art classes for seniors and children, using creativity as a tool for comfort and self-expression. In 2024, she founded a watercolor art program at BC Children’s Hospital as part of the Sibling Support Program, offering therapeutic paint nights for families of long-term care patients. She leads workshops at the Hospital each month and teaches art therapy at various retirement homes weekly.

Largely self-taught, Fedder has exhibited in numerous juried shows across Canada, including Artists in Our Midst and Paint on the Mountain, often as the youngest artist featured. In June 2025, she attended a residency in Provence, France, where she explored open-air painting and further developed her artistic voice within the region’s storied landscape.
